Honest answer: you can do this yourself, free

Turkish tax number for foreigners — the 15-minute DIY guide

Anyone can get a Turkish tax number, free, often without setting foot in Turkey. Here's exactly how — and what it does not do for you.

What it is

The tax identification number (vergi kimlik numarası) is a 10-digit identifier you need for almost any official interaction in Turkey: opening a bank account, buying property, signing up for utilities, getting a phone line. Foreigners with a residence permit are assigned one automatically through their foreigner ID; everyone else can request a "potential tax number".

How to get it

  1. Online (most people): go to the Interactive Tax Office (ivd.gib.gov.tr), choose the foreigners' potential tax number application, and submit your passport details and a passport photo/scan. The number is usually issued immediately as a PDF letter.
  2. In person: any tax office (vergi dairesi) issues one on the spot with your passport. No appointment needed in most offices.
  3. Keep the letter. Banks often want the issuance document, not just the number.
Don't pay for this. Agencies charge €50–150 for what is a free 15-minute process. We publish this guide precisely because the tax number is the easy part.

What it does NOT do

Need the hard parts — residency, certificate, the 20-year regime?
